History tells us that Holland, 32, is much better than he has shown during his brief tenure with the Cardinals. He’s essentially still going through spring training during the regular season because he didn’t agree to his $14 million, one-year contract until March 29.

Teams need that time to prepare the starting pitchers as they build up their arm strength and refine their pitches. Hitters would argue that they could be ready for the season after a month of camp. Relievers probably don’t need all six weeks to prepare for the season, but they surely could benefit from a month — or at least more than a week and two outings — to prepare to face big leaguers.

Veteran righthander Bud Norris has been a godsend to the Cardinals, and so has rookie fireballer Jordan Hicks. Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak and general manager Michael Girsch deserve credit for being the only team willing to give Norris a big league contract and then being wise enough to put Hicks on the opening day roster.
